Circassia is a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on respiratory disease. Our growing commercial organization promotes our innovative asthma management products directly to specialist physicians, we market the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) product Tudorza in the United States, and we have a strong pipeline of asthma and COPD treatments in development

Our asthma management products

Our market-leading NIOX products are used by specialists around the world to aid asthma diagnosis and management. We sell NIOX direct in the United States, United Kingdom and Germany, and we are strengthening our presence in Europe and China. Our NIOX products are also supplied in many other countries through our international network of partners

Our US commercial collaboration

We collaborate with AstraZeneca in the United States, where we promote the COPD product Tudorza and have the commercial rights to Duaklir*, which is in phase III development for the US market. Both products feature the novel Pressair device. As part of our collaboration we have doubled our US salesforce and strengthened our commercial team

Our respiratory pipeline

Our lead asthma product targets substitution of GSK's Flixotide pMDI, and was approved in the UK. We anticipate a filing for regulatory approval in 2019 for our product targeting direct substitution of Seretide pMDI. We are also developing a number of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease treatments, including novel formulations of currently approved drugs and a substitute for Spiriva Handihaler

Our history

Circassia was established in 2006, and in March 2014 we completed an initial public offering on the London Stock Exchange.  In June 2015, we completed the acquisitions of Aerocrine and Prosonix as part of our strategy to independently commercialize our products and broaden our pipeline, and in April 2017 we established our US commercial collaboration with AstraZeneca

Our business development strategy is a key component of our vision and contributes to Circassia's overall strategic growth targets and enable the company to continue along its path of strong, sustainable growth.

Our corporate head office is located in Oxford, UK and the company has regional offices inResearch Triangle, Raleigh NC, USA, Germany,, Sweden and China.

Position/Key Responsibilities of Role   

Reporting directly to the Chief Business Officer and working closely with the SVP US Commercial, Circassia is looking to recruit a dynamic and highly commercially attuned Business Development Director North America

The role will involve identifying new growth opportunities through external business development activities that will include licensing and M&A. The position has no direct reports but will be able to draw upon other resources within the company as needed

The role is an end-to-end business development role starting from lead identification and generation, screening of targets and the development of full business cases for selected targets, coordination of due-diligence teams, acting as deal champion, to leading the negotiation and integration teams, and closing the deal

Key Responsibilities of role will include:

  • Take the lead on potential Business Development and Licensing transactions for US and Canada, working with the CBO and other colleagues as required
  • Contribute to identification, sourcing and execution of global opportunities
  • Drive Business Development and Licensing initiatives, to drive the value and growth of the company
  • Ensure successful evaluation, structuring, and negotiation of deals, and participate in due diligence on BD & Licensing opportunities as and when required
  • Analyse market and product opportunities building the commercial reviews
  • Contribute to building 10 year plans for products/businesses
  • Work with colleagues in commercial, legal, IP, finance, tax, R&D and supply chain to ensure that high quality contracts and commitments are negotiated and created to optimise the future commercial interests of the business
  • Ensure optimal collaborative work ethos throughout the business, in particular with the R&D and Commercial teams to ensure effectiveness of BD efforts
  • Build appropriate external image and keep regular contact/network with external audiences of relevance including attendance at related conferences and industry gatherings

Manage BD and Licensing opportunities from concept to conclusion including project managing Prospectus preparation and shareholder circulars where appropriate

Skills, Capabilities and Personal Attributes

  • Solid experience and career progression (several years) in Biotech / Pharma with experience in senior BD&L roles with a proven personal track record of deal making in M&A, in/out-licensing and joint ventures
  • Business understanding: able to quickly grasp the importance and transformational impact of Circassia' technology platforms, to structure complex contracts and deals, and to perform market, company and product solution analysis
  • Knowledge of public company requirements and what it takes to get deals approved
  • Knowledge of respiratory and related areas space, plus ideally in medical devices coupled with an international network of relevance to Circassia's focus will be highly valuable
  • Advanced negotiation skills: having played a leading role in negotiations and secured the closure of successful deals
  • Evidence of initiative, drive and energy and ability to work independently
  • Displayed a high degree of confidence and gravitas to work in a highly visible role, ability to operate at the most senior levels of any organization with a high degree of accountability and responsibility
  • Excellent communication and networking skills. Should be comfortable with attending conferences and partnering events, and level speaking with key opinion leaders, scientists and licensing professionals
  • Well-developed skills in scientific, financial and market analysis, pricing and structuring associated with deal making
  • Proactive and goal-oriented while also sensitive to the needs of individuals, able to support, develop and motivate people to get the best out of them
  • An excellent communicator, influencer and negotiator with the confidence and professional competence to win respect and gain credibility at all levels within and outside the Circassia
  • A strong team-player, open to challenge and criticism and equally not afraid to speak their mind, stand their ground and challenge others; flexible, practical and pragmatic; proactive and willing to take the initiative; and comfortable in a fast-moving, dynamic, team-based environment
  • A versatile self-starter who can adapt quickly to a constantly changing environment

Qualifications and/or experience required to perform the role

Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Science or Economics, plus ideally an additional business qualification such as an MBA.
